Saint Urdin was a famous Archon of Sentanos, who is credited with the establishment of its complex and idiosyncratic legal system. The adherents of the order founded in his name are responsible for maintaining and interpreting the vast library of legal tomes and precedents that have accumulated over the many centuries since Urdin's first court.
Accepting only applicants from the First Church of Scripture, the order is an integral part of the city's judicial system. The orderlies serve as both clerks and advocates, recording judgements in intricate detail for posterity, and arguing the merits of cases based upon both Urdin's original statutes and the precedents set by subsequent rulings. In fact, the sheer intricacy of this vast body of law means that the magistrates who are nominally responsible for passing judgement also find themselves heavily dependent upon the orderlies' interpretation when making their rulings.
Supposedly, the monks vows of poverty and chastity render them immune to corruption, but the order itself receives many 'charitable donations' from anonymous donors which are allegedly used to buy influence. They also take a vow of truthfulness, but their ability to construct tortuous and specious arguments that defy refutation has helped to make the sarcastic phrases as true as a Legalist's argument and as honest as a Lawmaker popular in Syran.
