Additional occupations for Syran and Sentanos:
The Artisans of Syran are skilled professionals who make a living by creating and selling quality goods or artworks. Almost all are members of a Guild, and most rent, share or own a workshop. Their temperaments and talents vary, ranging from creative artists such as painters and sculptors, to dedicated craftsman such as shipwrights and masons. All tend to have some business acumen as well as their practical or artistic skills.
Each District is responsible for recruiting and maintaining its own Regiment of City Guards. Their purpose is to both to defend the city from external threats, and, as part of the Watch, to keep the peace and enforce the laws within its walls. This keyword focusses on the latter role, which is quite different to that of the typical foot soldier. These individuals are rarely well-paid, and are often tempted to supplement their salaries by imposing fines or accepting bribes.
Knights are elite soldiers, normally from the Soldier or Noble classes. Most are members of an Order and owe allegiance to one of the Houses. Lance fighting is a standard part of their training, and the sword is a popular weapon for close combat, but not all are in the heavily-armoured Seshnelan mould. Missile weapons are rarely used, but many knights are proficient with a number of melee weapons and medium armour is common.
The Personal Guards of the Houses make up the bulk of the city's standing army. Like their brethren in the Watch, many have a very different role in peace-time, providing personal security for their masters, and this keyword focusses upon them. The guards employed by wealthy merchants in the city are very similar.
Servants are employed by nobles or wealthy professionals to perform domestic tasks or run errands throughout the city.
The following standard occupations are available:
The various Schools within the city house a surprising number of students. Some are truly drawn to the wizarding life, and are clearly destined to become adepts. Many, however, are reluctant students, compelled to follow in a parent's footsteps, or insignificant, troublesome and/or unattractive members of well-to-do families, consigned to a life of study in the absence of any more useful or attractive career.
The most common cavalry soldiers in Syran are Knights (see separate keyword), but there are also a few Mercenaries, both native in origin and from other parts of Safelster. Some are failed or disgraced ex-knights, but most simply lack the favour of one the Houses. They are all regarded with pity or disdain by their more fortunate counterparts. Most of these individuals belong to one of the mercenary Companies that operate in the city.
Mercenaries are employed as caravan guards or bounty hunters, and bolster the ranks of the army in time of war. They should use the standard HQ keyword, and select a suitable specialisation (Regular or Shock).
Syran's numerous churches employ numerous minor clergymen, ranging from humble deacons to charismatic liturgists. They are normally considered to be a part of the Philosopher class.
Entertainers of all varieties can be found in the city, from the lofty poets and musicians that enjoy the patronage of the Houses, to the conjurers and minstrels who ply their art on the streets or in the taverns.
Farmers in Syran are mostly yokels from the surrounding countryside, who have recently come to the city to make their fortune. They are no different to their brethren in other cultures.
Most of the city's foot soldiers are City Guards or Personal Guards, and use the corresponding keywords. Some of these guards do undertake more conventional soldiering duties, however, and these individuals more closely resemble their peers in other cultures.
Like their mounted counterparts, Mercenary foot soldiers are also used in Syran, and usually belong to one of the city's mercenary Companies. They may also provide an escort for merchant caravans, but are rarely used as guards within the city.
Both types of foot soldier should use the standard HQ keyword, and select a suitable specialisation (Archer, Ordinary or Shock).
Healers range from the dedicated and selfless followers of the Hospitallers Order of St Xemela, to the more affluent private physicians of the nobility. They are usually from the Soldier class, but some are considered part of the Philosopher class.
Syran's wealth is founded upon trade, and its merchants are well-known for their commercial acumen. The city has a number of markets, dealing in local goods and imported items, and two commercial ports. Merchants are normally of the Guildsman class, and belong to one of the city's Associations.
Petty nobles will be minor members of (or members of minor) Houses.
With two thriving commercial ports, Syran has no shortage of sailors. Flat-bottomed rivercraft are used to ferry goods and people up and down the Doskior, while on the lake the larger, sleeker and swifter galleys are used for both commerce and occasional naval warfare.
River sailors should replace the standard Navigate By Stars ability with Navigate River, and both types of sailor should replace Seamanship with Make Minor Repairs.
The city is home to numerous scholars, ranging from minor members of the Schools who are more interested in scholarship than magic, to itinerant foreign academicians drawn by its reputation for lively philosophical discourse. Members of the city's monastic Orders may also use this keyword.
Thieves in Syran are likely to belong to (or at least be associated with) one of the Syndicates.
The more capable of the city's apprentices, and magically-inclined members of its various Schools may eventually become Wizards. Most of these worthies stay on as masters at their alma mater, but a few prefer to pursue their studies in isolation, or to use their skills for more practical applications.
