Syran has a rich variety of indigenous churches, orders and schools, which are united by a common set of beliefs; these institutions are collectively known as the Ecumenical Communion of Syran. All of the indigenous churches honour Arkat as a prophet alongside Malkion and Hrestol, crediting him with a revelation on a par with the familiar tenets revealed by his two peers: Solace of the Body and Joy of the Heart. Theologicians often describe this revelation as Subsidiarity, but it is more commonly called the Regency of the Powers.
The extraordinary trajectory of Arkat's life is held up as proof of this belief. He demonstrated that it was possible, and even desirable, for pious Malkioni to revere certain deities and other entities. These entities, known in Syran as the Regents or the Lords Temporal, are recognised as authorised lieutenants of the Invisible God in their specific dominions. In some churches they are worshipped alongside Him as instruments of the Divine Will.
The worshippers of these churches frequently participate in the common religion of The Lords Temporal in addition to the normal weekly services. This is accepted and even encouraged by some congregations, although more conservative churches, such as the Imperial Church, frown upon this practice.
Each of the churches in the Communion has at least two different congregations within the city. Lay Members (including Temporal Members) of all of the churches have the following abilities in common.
